The Virgin of El Rocío appears because her psychologist told her to

SYNOPSIS

After centuries high up on altars, shrouded in incense and promises, surrounded by red carnations and locks of hair, the Virgin of El Rocío has said “enough!”. She’s fed up with being worshipped, applauded, and praised, yes… but not listened to. Tired of being everyone’s mother and, at the same time, the great forgotten one.

While her son hogs the miracles and her husband takes the credit for silence, she—the MOTHER—is reduced to a pious ornament. But it’s over. In this celestial comedy, the Virgin makes an appointment with a psychologist. Because even the divine needs therapy. And 2,000 years is a long time…

She only dreams of stepping down from her pedestal and dancing frantically to Rita Pavone, because it’s finally her turn, isn’t it?

In this irreverent and luminous comedy, the Virgin of El Rocío decides to face her divine and human traumas and revisit her role in that great patriarchal bestseller called the Bible. A journey between the mystical and the mundane, where angels don’t know how to manage emotions, saints don’t understand gender, other virgins fight over joint custody, and God, well… God has unfinished business.

THE VIRGIN OF EL ROCÍO APPEARS BECAUSE HER PSYCHOLOGIST TOLD HER TO comes to break holy cards, rethink dogmas and, while she’s at it, reclaim another version of History. She isn’t just the eternal mother, the irreproachable wife, or the tireless caregiver. She is much more.

Gemma Martínez and Vito Rogado play the Virgin and her devotee in a lucid and human conversation about new ways of worshipping. Is this a world that needs faith? Is the world full of blind devotees? (This is not a mass.)
